Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) launches its new Dental Assisting Academic Certificate (AC) program at its Cumberland Campus. This rigorous program is designed to provide students with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the fast-growing dental assisting field.
The Dental Assisting Academic Certificate equips students with a comprehensive education in dental assisting practices. Students will learn both clinical and administrative skills, preparing them to handle a variety of dental office tasks, including assisting in dental procedures, taking x-rays, and managing patient records. The program spans over three [RP1] semesters, or one academic year, including one [RP2] summer session. Upon successful completion, students will be licensed registered dental assistants.
Before applying, students must attend an information session. These sessions will provide important details about the program's requirements and offer applicants an opportunity to ask questions about the admissions process and curriculum. Upcoming sessions include an in-person meeting on Monday, February 17 at 3 p.m., as well as two virtual sessions on Monday, March 3 and Tuesday, March 11.
Students must submit their portfolio by March 14, 2025, including all required forms, transcripts and their official HSRT-AD score reports to be eligible for consideration. Admission decisions will be sent on April 4, 2025.
“We are thrilled to offer this new program to our students and the community," said Dr. Fred Keating, President of RCSJ. “Dental assisting is a vital part of the healthcare system, and there is a growing demand for trained professionals. This certificate provides students with a clear pathway to a rewarding career in a high-demand field."
The Dental Assisting Academic Certificate program prepares students to sit for the three components of the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Exams: the Radiation Health and Safety Examination (RHS), Infection Control Examination (ICE), and General Chairside Examination (GC)—all of which are part of the nationally recognized Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification. In addition to earning the CDA certification, graduates will also be eligible to apply for New Jersey Dental Radiology Technologist licensure and Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) licensure in the state of New Jersey. Graduates can also pursue an Associate in Applied Science (A. A. S,[RP3] ) degree in Dental Assisting.
The program includes a combination of hands-on instruction, theoretical coursework, and clinical experiences, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for certification exams and licensure. The certificate is designed for full-time students and can be completed in as little as one year.
